That A/C Condenser Breaker Oversized?
Переглядів 59721 день тому
This is a topic that create so much controversy. For me this was more of a manufacturer's installation instruction for the condenser. Some the people stated I didn't know what I was talking about, that this is a code related NEC issue. This video hopefully sheds a little light on the topic.

You can also add a block onto the left side of the bigger boxes on the other side without the stud to help keep the box from flexing in the drywall.
what they pay is what they get 😂
Use insulated box . The bad won't sit right with the foam like that.
Sure, at double the cost per box. Or, you can use spray foam behind the box, and you should already have spray foam handy in order to seal the penetrations in the floor and ceiling plates. Doing this may use up a second can of foam at maybe $15?
Also, an insulated box is more properly called an air-sealed box, meaning that all of the penetrations in the box have a foam seal. It does NOT add any R-value behind the box to the wall cavity. Adding fiberglass or mineral wool adds R-value but not air sealing. Spray foam does both.
Is this new??
Nope
That stuff is farmable why is behind in the electrical box?
What is farmable?
It's fire-rated spray foam. What's the issue with fire-rated spray foam?
Nice
I appreciate you watching!!!
Love the videos, if you can explain the "why" behind the codes that would be cool. I know the electric has to do with heat, only 3 wires through a hole, and I believe you can only make a hole smaller than 1/3 of a joist or stud. I appreciate the videos.🙏💯
That vent under the stove is 110% dumb s#!+ right there.
For sure..
I had to fast forward to get to the symptoms. You did not help. You definitely lost me when you suggested to pay for someone to do it.
Yikes. Wondering how these houses pass permitting or municipal inspection?!
NEC is run by the companies that make the devices so they can sell them for more money.
Your whole system is unsafe and senseless
Thank you man, loving these videos. Trying to learn as much tips about code as I can before building my first home.
I appreciate your feedback, and thanks for watching.
@PPG1967 absolutely. I've got a question which I'm having a hard time finding the answer. Haven't talked to a code officer yet, hoping you may know. Is it possible for someone wanting to build their own house if say I was planning to live in it when complete to pull my own plumbing or electrical permits and do that work myself? I'm in Maine where we're allowed to do our own electrical/plumbing in a house we live in. But not sure if that applies to a new construction. I'm trying to plan it out to do as much of it myself as possible.
@Atanimus_ you should check with your city or state building department first, but it's pretty common to pull your own permits.
Locking caps for the condenser because the kids likey to sniffy the freon
You got it...
Are there oversized stud shoes, the issue I'm having is that a piece of a y pipe is protruding into the stud, making the hole for the pipe about an inch and a half larger then it would normally be. Oddly, the inspector called for one, in a non load bearing wall, inside of a stackable washer dryer closet. The hole is oblong, and the only stud shoes I can find would only accommodate a 2 inch pipe. The dimensions of the hole are about 3.5x2, and he wants it on both sides of the stud, which seems ridiculous. Any help would be appreciated.
Hello, I have a new construction project going and have a question. I'm thinking of using 2" rigid foam board in between the studs (16" on center) on my exterior walls, leaving a 1 1/2" air gap between the foam board and the exterior sheathing and foaming any gaps around the edges of the foam board between the studs. Then installing 1/2" foam board over the face of the studs on the exterior walls prior to installing 1/2" sheetrock. Would like your professional opinion on this. Also would i need to install a vapor barrier as well? Thank you
So, will that meet your required R-value for exterior walls?
Where are you located?
They are not substituting the osb. The osb helps keep the structure together if the house did not use osb the house could collapse. That is a wall weather barrier that goes on the osb which is cheaper than the normal house wrap that is used.
They are substituting the osb for this Thermo-Ply. I see it all the time.
Is it makeup air for the kitchen hood?
Negative...it's just a bad location for a supply register.
Just bought a pair off Facebook marketplace. The lady who sold them to said the only other she could find was one on the east coast in eBay
Cool...they're hard to find!!
The black one on the right is 20 amp, it has the horizontal slot in order to accommodate a 20 amp plug. It's there to identify this is a 20 amp circuit and the white one on the left is 15 amp and may indicate a 15 amp circuit.
Very good... you are correct!!
I stopped saying “um” by consciously stopping whenever i noticed saying it, and went back and said the sentence again without “um” it helped me hope it helps you.
great video , if you could do more of these that would be awesome
More to come!….I appreciate you watching.
Hi there, I live in Long Island New York near the water, but we rarely get any floods here; but also because we are so low, the foundation is mostly wet. I'm brought 2 foundation companies to check out my crawl space And one of the companies told me to eliminate all access windows and leave only 1 and make the crawl space air tight, and put a moist barrier on the ground, foam spray on the walls and installation on the ceiling. The other company told me to leave all 3 windows and put automatic ventilation windows with a commercial dehumidifier and a sub pump, and he also told me to put the same floor barrier with foam on the walls, but he told me I don't need Insulation on the ceiling. Which one should I do? Also the first company told me that I should replace all brick support columns underneath with metal adjustable rods and the other company said to leave the support as it is. They are so opposite and I don't know what to do, and they are both experts with lots of years of experience with high reviews. What would you recommend sir?
Not being there to actually evaluate your crawl space. I am familiar with the first option. That should encapsulate and condition the entire crawl space.
For the rough electrical not being done and covered do you just have the home owner hire a contractor to write a letter stating everything is fine or do you cut open sections?
We make them pull off all of the drywall.
Inspector should have caught that missing outlet in the kitchen. Not call it on final.
It happens sometimes.
Did you know you can use a houses power wires for Internet? It's called ethernet over power and uses an adapter to send data into an outlet and another adapter to receive it. It's great for area where there is a lot of interference.
Oh ok...that's good to know.
the goal is to transfer the load to the foundation. Plywood quality compared to 30 years ago sucks balls today so unless you are using all brick, "all hail the Masons", then its the same. edit : unless you have a fatty that runs into your house, your good. Thankfully they cant run.
I appreciate your comment, and thanks for watching.
Great video. It's a shame the city is allowing the use of Dryline sheathing.
I appreciate your feedback, and thanks for watching!!
YOu only need Inch and a half barring. And I’d like to see anyone try to take that apart with all them nails In it. Bet it passes code inspection no problem.
It won't with those nails.
Thanks for these informative videos. It will keep a lot of amatures from doing ‘stupid ‘dings’.
I appreciate your feedback, and thanks for watching
That's a well built deck, someone got their money's worth!
Oh ok... you think so?
👍
I appreciate you watching!!
Thanks! Very informative.
Since they're already there, why not just tie another from the single top plate to the joist, that way, they'll all be tied together. Or leave what you have and runs straps from the single top plate to the double top plate so they'll all be mechanically tied together.
So, it's the rafter to the wall assembly. Which is that double top plate. One long metal strap from the rafter to the double top plate.
Tell that to my county who’s making me install a thermal expansion on a backflow device at the water meter for a building that only has instahots under the sinks.
Where are you located?
@@PPG1967 Florida, job location is more specifically hillsborough county.
Great job, it’s great to hear and understand your perspective on building construction. All your videos show you have a wealth of knowledge and are a great customer advocate for all the successive future home buyers in the buildings you inspect. Well done, keep teaching.
I appreciate your feedback!!
Sketchy framing. Nothing stacks and it ain’t tight and right
Oh ok... you gathered that from a 60 second video?
Amazing!
I appreciate you watching!!
If I installed a new copper run to fix my old steel pipe to my washer, and did not pull a permit yet, I am pulling a permit to do a large section of my house since all the steel plumbing is failing as it is so so old. Can I just buy those add those screw on on Souix 90 deg hammer arrestors to "meet code" with newly installed plumbing when I bunch it all into the whole house plumbing permit that will soon be pulled. My water runs come from the top and are not conducive to bottom supplied washer water boxes with hammer arrestors in a 1884 house. I am dumping washer water into the sink the old way we all did it. I don't need a dedicated washer drain in an never to be finished farmhouse basement when a sink dump is right next to the washer. Saving money to afford all the stuff I need to do the work under permit.
Keep up the solid clips. This will help so many inspectors, not to mention the music clip selection is prime 👌! ❤❤ Cheers
I appreciate your feedback, and thanks for watching!!
That beam on the lower strap is also too short; look at the gap!
Oh ok
I hope they were polite, considering the videos are free. Thanks for the information
I appreciate your feedback, and thanks for watching !!
Keep moving forward and do what you've been doing because you've been a blessing to many and when you're doing the right thing you will get negative comments and negative people to help discourage you from the truth
I really appreciate you saying that...thanks for watching!!
Must be a Michigan thing.
Must be..
Can't understand, does not anyone read a detail sheet?
I know, right??
@@PPG1967everyone talk shit on framers but framers won’t ever talk shit on any subs. Called rough framing for a reason. And we have inspectors just incase we miss shit but keep talking Shit. If we were always perfect you don’t have a job.
Sir, framers discredit other contractors as well (especially plumbing contractors). I see it and hear it every day. So, I don't know where you got this one from, but it's blame across the board.
Why would anyone frame it this way to begin with? It doesn't make any sense....
You know, that's a good question..
Are birdsmouth cuts required? I just built my 10x20 shed without them.
As far as I know, they're not required.
i wanted to us the ridged foam boards like the pink stuff until i found out ants and termites love to tunnel trough it, no way would i put this or spray foam in my house after everything i read.
Ok, I appreciate your feedback.
Also oversized is the cost to install central HVAC these days.
I appreciate your feedback, and thanks for watching!!
Yes you are correct the max fuse or overcurrent protection device (MOP) is for the breaker size which protects the condenser. However the minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) is to determine the correct wire size. Example: The MCA listed on the nameplate = 28.6 amps. We then go to table 310.15 in the NEC and find the nothing less than a #10 Romex (NM cable) can be used on this condenser because a #10 wire is rated for 30 amps. A #12 wire would be too small because it is only rated for 20 amps. A #14 wire is rated for 15 amps etc. The MOP listed on the nameplate= 50 amps We then just go to the breaker/fuse for the condenser and check to make sure that it is not larger than the 50 amp MOP listed on the nameplate.
